SYNOPSIS

An unflinching depiction of the magic and madness during the making of Gods of Their Own Religion – a dystopian feature film from award-winning visionary director Naeem Mahmood.

This feature documentary is a revelatory exploration into the creative process of delivering a cinematic and grandiose, yet stunningly complex epic with zero budget, through improvisation, and breaking every rule in the film book. It centres on original interviews with filmmaker Naeem Mahmood, and extensive behind-the-scenes footage of his soon to be released film, Gods of Their Own Religion. Other interviews include actors and collaborators such as Ricki Hall, Kyd Nereida, Rueben James and Stephen Roach (Cinematographer).

Gods of Their Own Religion began as a radical young London filmmaker’s pipe dream, who during lockdown, wanted to revolutionise the future of filmmaking. This 50-minute documentary is a fascinating portrayal of a daredevil auteur driven to realise his maverick vision against staggering odds.

  • A new limited edition book will go behind the scenes of Naeem Mahmood’s Gods of Their Own Religion, charting the making of a grandiose, yet stunningly complex dystopian feature produced with zero budget, no script and breaking every rule in the film book.

Disarmingly candid and fearlessly honest, it’s a rarefied ‘access all areas’ pass into the creative process of delivering a feature film against staggering odds, and how cinematic obsession and pure-unbridled audacity can push the limits of what filmmakers can achieve.

This book reveals all the filming secrets, behind-the-scenes images, and the most memorable moments. Quotes from the Gods of Their Own Religion creative team and cast round out the images, providing context and an insightful, inspiring look at the inner-workings of this daring production.
